City Departments

City Departments

You, me, us - together we form the production departments.
We collaborate to make the burn event happen, before, during and after the city rises from the dust. It can be at the gate, in traffic, in communications, medicamp and many many other departments. This year there are 27 departments. Which one will you choose to participate in, experience, belong and become?

C’mon, join in!
(Each department has its own contact information listed below)

MOOP

Our community respects the environment.
One of Midburn's ten principles is
Leave No Trace
We take it upon ourselves to ensure a clean area during our own activities and everywhere else.

Gate

We are the gate team and we are the first to meet you at the entrance gate to our city. The gate is the toughest department when arriving at the playa (hugs come later, not with us). Our job is to bring Burners to the outskirts of the temporary city, give them the very desirable event bracelet and send them straight to the city's bustling center, feeling safe and happy. We are the face of the city, the guardians on the walls, the angels at the entrance to the dusty paradise. We are also the last ones to wave goodbye to you on your peaceful way out. Are you intrigued? Excellent. Now ask yourself if you are tough and sexy enough to join our team!

Traffic

If anything, why not a department on the move?

The Midburn Traffic Department ensures smooth vehicle movement to an unforgettable event.

As you may know, our department has a crucial role in managing vehicle flow inside and outside of the city, before and after the event.
We take pride in directing the thousands of vehicles that arrive to Midburn, guiding them to parking spots and provide rescue services when needed.

Tech

The Tech Department is the department responsible for ensuring that our frontier city is connected to the rest of the world. We develop and support information technologies so that we can make dreams come true in the best possible way. In addition, the department is responsible for all of the infrastructure and computing aspects required for the proper operation of the city.

So if you are smart at heart (and everyday), and have the knowledge and ability to be part of this amazing array - we would love to hear from you!

Mapatz - Department of Public Works

The Department of Public Works are the dedicated individuals that build and strike the infrastructure and public structures of our temporary city. They are the first to arrive in the area and the last to leave and are responsible for building the city's infrastructure, fencing, electricity, parking, and much, much more. A DPW volunteer needs strong physical work capacity, is diligent, can survive rough weather, works well in a team and finds pleasure in working for a common goal. The special character of the department turns the hard work into an experience. DPW members stay in touch throughout the year, on training days, fun days and weekends. Warning: Volunteering at DPW is addictive and may change your life in ways you never expected.

Greeters

The Greeters are the cheerful department that welcomes you to the kingdom and the city as soon as the registration process is completed and the entry permit is received. The role of the Greeters is to be the ones who greet the visitors and help them transition from the atmosphere of everyday, to the atmosphere of the burn. The entrance celebration will include all things good and joyful along with some short explanations about the important Midburn principles, and directing the newcomers to their next destination - the parking lot or their camp. The Greeters department wears a different face every Midburn, according to the theme the department chooses to adopt, so that the feeling of entering the city will become an unforgettable experience. Its happy here!

Control Room - The Hive

Have you ever wondered how all the departments at Midburn manage to communicate with each other? How do the messages pass through the dust? The Hive is the link between all production departments, the authorities and the people of the city. We have over 100 volunteers and act like a big brother watching your back.
The Hive supervises and coordinates reports from various departments and external parties for production, while also recording and routing information in real time.
The Hive is the place where radios ooze with filth and lewdity and all the frequencies in it are open (literally). So come and participate in the department orchestrating it all.
We're all bees, sometimes we sting but we also make honey!

Center Camp and Playa Info

The Salon is the heart and cultural center of Midburn. A shaded space to rest, meet, show, hold a workshop or give a lecture and reminisce. The living room serves as a platform for holding content of any kind and is built for the use of all residents of the city and everyone is welcome. We will be happy to host you and give you the space to express yourself!

The Midburn information center, named Playa Info, is located and operated together with the living room. The information center offers content, technical aid, orientation, lost and found, real time info and even a mail service.

Nomads

Nomadism is a philosophy of life. The nomads see the importance of listening to others, helping, assisting and serving the city's residents - whoever they may be. They operate at various occasions with the will to help, assist, bridge and support the participants. The nomads are community members that are on site, at all times, to make sure that every participant feels safe and knows that they have a safe space and someone to talk to when needed.

Accessibility

הנגשה_edited.png

The Accessibility Department is a department which works so that EVERYBODY can take part, experience, and enjoy our temporary city.

The Lighthouse

We are another “responsible adult” at Midburn, part of the event management team. We are here to make the entire event management an easier affair. With 24/7 availability, the Lighthouse is always fully aware of what is going on around the event and supports the production and the community in real time. The Lighthouse solves problems when they arise, exercises discretion or refers the problem onwards to the right people when needed.

The Gates of Culture

You finally arrived home, but where did the journey begin? Long before unloading equipment in the camp, long before the gate and greeters, it starts with the first form.

The Gates of Culture department was born out of a need and understanding that participants experience their first contact with Midbarn culture through participation.

True participation is created from a sense of belonging and an inner drive. Such a feeling cannot be created through laws but only through culture.

The Gates of Culture department (formerly the HR Department) is the department responsible for the cultural presence at community events and for welcoming new community members.

The Art Fund

Midburn Art Fund is the professional body in charge of providing art grants. The fund serves as a model to encourage the creation of inspiring spaces, and supports dozens of art installations in the public areas - from initial vision through implementation at the event.
Grant requests are checked by volunteering professionals assembled with a common goal to assist the dreamers. Some of the art installations will live on and reach cities and other spaces in Israel and the rest of the world. The Art Fund was founded during the first Midburn in 2014 and has granted over 4 million NIS to date.

Support

The Support Department works year round, right up to the grand opening of the event, and heads back to work as soon as it’s done. The department is active year-round and relies on volunteers to answer any requests and questions that reach the official email box of the organization - support@midburn.org. Additionally, we also answer and monitor the communications via the official Midburn Facebook page.

Fire Tribe

The Fire Tribe is the hottest department in town! The tribe allows fires to happen in Midburn as a body that works for public safety during fires, and directly advises fire related art installations. We work throughout the year to raise awareness of fire safety, and to promote fire culture and performance. During Midburn we produce the ceremony that precedes the burning of the central sculpture - the Effigy. The ceremony includes fire artists, dancers, musicians and anyone who wants to be part of the show.

Clinic (Medburn)

Medburn is a medical team consisting of the best doctors, nurses, paramedics, medics and other attendants, coming together to give you the gift of life, when you really need it! Without a need for medical insurance, from a band aid to a front horn transplant - we’re here for you, 24/7, even when it’s really hot outside.
We hope you never need us!

Content

What is content? Content is the reason to move to the depths of the playa and wander along the streets. Content is absolute self-expression, it is the dream of its creators that comes to life, and sometimes, it also fulfills the dreams of random visitors. Whether it's a towering installation, or a minimalist and touching piece, a host camp that gives from the heart, or a Theme Camp that initiates challenging experiences. It can be a colorful art car that passes us and invites us for a ride. It can appear as a live performance that leaves us spellbound and speechless. All this and countless other experiences are full of content, and these experiences make Midburn what it is. The Content Department is a union of the Art Department and the Theme Camp Department, and was established to produce a comprehensive layout that takes all the components of the city into account with a holistic view. The department encourages interactions and collaborations between all content creators and also encourages a common language and connection to the chosen theme. The department holds inspiration and enrichment meetings throughout the year for camp leaders and art teams so that every dream can find partners and a way to come true. The creators of content are accompanied by department Angels, from the moment of submitting the registration form until settling in the playa. Together we create a new and united community, in which all the participants dream, meet, create and realize together invested, original, challenging and wonderful content.

The SafeZone will be manned by dedicated volunteers from our community and is pleasant and comfortable to allow whoever needs it to rest, gather energy and receive support from our caregiving team.

City Safety

City Safety is the department responsible for making sure that your dreams come true in the safest way. We want to allow all camps and artists to safely express themselves and maintain a peaceful community. Midburn's safety team are the ones who go through all of the diagrams and plans you submit, and make sure they are acceptable according to the definitions of the city's safety engineer, who implements safety regulations established by law.

The department is open for recruiting participants:

  • Civil engineers -  with experience and practical knowledge in performing static calculations (calculation of anchorages under wind loads and calculation of audience occupancy).

  • Mechanical engineers - for evaluating dynamic elements.

Come with love ❤️

MITA is the body assisting and helping those who suffered any form of sexual harassment/assault at Midburn. MITA provides an initial response to inquiries regarding sexual harassment and assault, helps those who need it, and provides a safe and enveloping space on the playa and beyond. In addition, the department stimulates lively community discourse on the subject of sexual vulnerability, desire and passionate sexuality, with the aim of reducing cases of harm at community events.

That said, we do not have the authority to locate an offender, or remove him from the city. This is part of MITA's agenda - to devote 100% attention to the victim. Also, MITA does not initiate additional contact with the victim (for example, later on during the same event) for fear of harming privacy or the victim’s sense of control.

If necessary, contact the supervisor for sexual harassment - https://www.midburn.org/memunot

We are available 24/7 throughout the event! If you experience any harm from a participant at the event you can either contact MITA, come to us at the MITA compound near the clinic, approach the MITA helpers who are walking around the area, or call 052-8622466.

Sound

The department is responsible for all sound-related matters at events, ranging from the camp arts to the licensing itself.

The Sound Department was established out of a need to create a body that would guide and mediate between the city's camps and establish guiding principles.
Additionally, the department is responsible for everything related to sound equipment, proper conduct, enforcement to prevent noise and cacophony, and establishing a standard for the sound camps and artists -  before and during the event.

The department's aspiration is to strike a balance where the right to radical artistic expression is preserved without compromising the experience of the other city participants, while also adhering to licensing conditions with the external residents of the land.
