Procedures and regulations for using gas based cooking systems


  1. We are building a temporary city in the event that consists of tent camps and theme camps.

  2. These include shade structures, tents, mattresses, etc. These are flammable materials.

  3. Incorrect use in cooking gas can light up these materials and damage lives and property.

  4. The dangers of gas use are: accumulation of flammable gas in enclosed areas that can lead to an explosion; leaky gas hose that can cause it to light up; a fire due to burning of flammable material next to the gas tank.

  5. The procedures in this document were written in accordance with the relevant laws, regulations and standards, and in particular based on the Australian bureau for energy safety in the state of Victoria:

1. Definitions:

  1. Gas tank - Gas tanks up to a weights of 12 Kg

  2. Camp - For the purposes of this procedure: any living space that includes tents, shade structures, RVs etc.

  3. Gas consumer - any device for cooking only that uses gas as the source of burn material such as: stove tops, BBQ, cooking oven, etc.

2. Code of conduct for use of gas in camps and tent areas:

  • Use of disposable gas containers/tanks of any type is prohibited.

  • The gas tank will be placed at a distance of no less than 3 meters from tents

  • The gas tank will be up to standard with a valid inspection date.

  • The gas tank will be buried in the ground or be protected with sand bags.

  • The distance between the gas tank and the consumer device shall not be under 3 meters.

  • The distance between a gas tank in one space to a gas tank in an adjacent space (e.g., camp) shall not be under than 10 meters.

  • At the exit valve of the gas tank a pressure regulator will be installed. The regulator will decrease the gas pressure going out of the tank to 4 bars (60 PSI) according to standard 158.

  • The gas pipe connecting the tank to the gas consumer shall be a copper pipe that complies with standard 158, with the following minted on it:

    • The name of the standard according to which it was manufactured.

    • The outside diameter of the pipe

    • The width of the pipe wall or the ratio between the width and the diameter

    • The pipe material

    • The manufacturing date of the pipe.

  • All of the connections between the different parts of the system will be done using gas connectors according to standard 158.

  • The pipe will be buried in the ground to avoid damage, including clear markings above the ground of the pipe path.

  • The tank area will be protected/fenced to avoid damage to the top of the tank such that the protection should be at least 10 cm higher than the top of the tank.

  • At the end of installation, and in each day of the event, the gas system will be inspected by a level 2 (at least) gas technician provided by the event production, and will be approved by him/her.

  • The first inspection, and every one thereafter, will be done with the presence of one of these: camp leader, camp safety leader, camp kitchen leader.

  • If the inspector does not approve the system, it should not be used until all flaws are fixed and it is approved in a re-inspection by the inspector.

3. Safety guidance for gas use

  • No changes should be made to the gas system after the approval of the gas inspector

  • Any source of fire in the camp is possible only when the safety range from tents, shade structures and flammable materials is at least 3 meters.

  • The fence around the gas tank will be 40 cm above ground. To avoid gas accumulation, the open ground at the bottom of the fence should not be less than 30% of the fence circumference.

  • Avoid any holes in the ground in the immediate vicinity of the gas consumer to avoid gas accumulation.

  • The gas container will be placed at a distance of at least 10 meters from the electrical board feeding the camp, and not less than 2 meters from any electrical source.

  • Use of the gas systems will be done by an adult over 18 years old.

  • During the entire time that fire burns in the gas consumer there will be an adult supervising that there is no contact between the fire and children.

  • Upon completion of gas use, the gas supply from the tank should be closed first, followed by the supply to the gas consumer.

  • Each camp will have means of fire control in a location that is clearly marked and known to all of the camp participants. These include at least 2 fire extinguishers (6 Kg, dry power) that will be placed in the kitchen area and one in the camp entrance.

  • No heavy objects should be placed on the pipes to avoid damage to them and a gas leak.

  • Before any activation of the gas system the following should be performed: Visual inspection of the gas system to ensure its integrity, ensuring there is no smell of gas that may indicate a leak, and removal of any flammable material from the vicinity of the system.

  • In case of damage to the pipe or any other part, the gas tank valve should be closed and any use of the system should be halted until the issue is fixed and the system is approved by a level 2 gas technician.

  • In case of a gas smell in the camp space, the gas valve should be shut off immediately and should not be opened again until the system is inspected and approved again for use.

  • In case of an emergency event requiring evacuation of the space - the gas tank valve should be closed so the gas supply is disconnected before the evacuation.
