Gas Stove Rules

  1. Background

    1. As part of the event, a temporary city is being built, comprising tents and camps containing fabric shading structures, mattresses and other objects.

    2. These objects are mostly flammable.

    3. Incorrect use of gas cookers can induce an ignition of these materials and therefore cause harm to people and property.

    4. The use of gas cookers may carry the risk of leak, accumulation of gas in confined spaces, and spontaneous ignition.

    5. The following guidelines are based on the Australian Code of Practice for the safe use of LP Gas at public events in Victoria (version 04/2015).

  2. Definitions

    1. Gas Tank - a 12 Kg tank of gas for cooking.

    2. Camp - in the context of these guidelines: any living space containing shades, tents and RVs.

    3. Appliance - any device that uses gas for cooking such as stoves and barbeques.

    4. Portable Stove - any portable device that uses a smaller tank\canister than the above 12 Kg. These devices are strictly forbidden during the event.

  3. Installation Guidelines

    1. The use of gas is for cooking only.

    2. The gas tank shall be placed at least 3 metres away from nearby tents.

    3. The gas tank shall be authorised and carry a valid inspection date.

    4. The gas tank should be buried or placed between several sandbags, with its top uncovered.

    5. The distance between the tank and the appliance shall be no less than 3 metres.

    6. The distance between gas tanks of two different camps shall be no less than 10 metres.

    7. The gas tank shall be fitted with a pressure regulator, reducing the outlet pressure to 4 bars (60 PSI), as directed by Israeli Standard 158.

    8. The tube connecting the tank to the valve shall be a copper tube that adheres to Israeli Standard 158. The tube shall be marked with:

      1. The standard by which the tube is made.

      2. The outer diameter of the tube.

      3. The wall thickness or thickness\diameter ratio.

      4. The material it is made of.

      5. The date of fabrication.

    9. The tube connecting the tank valve to the gas appliance shall be a standard rubber tube no longer than 3 meters.

    10. All connections shall be made using fittings that comply with Israeli Standard 158.

    11. The copper tube shall be buried underground and its path shall be marked above ground.

    12. The tank top shall be fenced to a height of 10 cm to protect it from accidental impact.

    13. After installation, and every day throughout the event, the gas system will be inspected by a level 2 gas technician approved by the production.

    14. The first inspection, and each following inspection shall be carried out in the presence of either: the camp manager, the camp safety manager, or the camp kitchen manager.

    15. In any event where the inspector shall not authorise the use of the system, it is forbidden for use, until all repairs and modifications are made, and the system is re-inspected by the technician.

  4. Handling Guidelines

    1. Any modifications to the gas system after inspection is strictly forbidden.

    2. Placing the fire source in the camp is only allowed within a safety distance of at least 3 metres from all tents, shading, and flammable material. The stove or other gas appliance should not be placed under any shading structure.

    3. Any fencing near the gas tank shall be lifted 40 cm above ground. The width of the lifted fence shall be no less than 30% of all the fencing.

    4. Any voids and holes in the ground around the burner should be avoided to reduce the risk of gas accumulation.

    5. The gas tank shall be placed at least 7 metres from the camp’s electricity panel, and at least 2 metres from any power source.

    6. The use of a gas system is only allowed for adults over the age of 18.

    7. Any time there is an open flame, an adult will be present to guard it from children.

    8. When done cooking, the tank valve shall be closed first, followed by the stove valve.

    9. Every camp shall own at least 2 fire extinguishers (6 Kg dry powder) that will be placed in the kitchen, and in the entrance to the camp. Both should have a valid inspection date.

    10. Heavy objects shall not be placed on gas tubing.

    11. Before each use of the gas system, the system should be visually inspected for damage or smell of gas, and any nearby flammable materials should be removed.

    12. In case of damage to tubing or any other element in the system, the tank valve should be closed, and the system shall be out of use until repaired and inspected by a technician.

    13. In case of gas smell detected in the camp, the tank valve should be closed, and the system shall be out of use until repaired and inspected by a level 2 technician.

    14. In case of an emergency evacuation from the camp, the tank valve should be closed to cut the supply of gas.
